ASAP: Alternative Sentencing & Advocacy Program
ASAP Goal: The goal of ASAP and other diversion programs is to allow a defendant time to demonstrate that they can behave responsibly, and they are typically used for drug offenses or first-time offenders. Normally, the conditions imposed include some form of counseling and/or probation and require the defendant to stay out of trouble.
ASAP has been developed to offer the justice system some remedies. It is important to note that the very system designed to protect and support the full development of individuals actually mitigates (works) against and, in many cases, provides actual barriers to success. This is especially prevalent in Chicago and surrounding communities.
While we understand that no silver bullet or one strategy will suffice, ASAP proposes a multi-tiered approach to addressing juvenile justice reform, sentencing reform, re-entry, drug treatment, and access to mental health care.
