Woman killed, man critically injured in Canaryville drive-by shooting
CHICAGO — A drive-by shooting in Chicago’s Canaryville neighborhood claimed a young woman’s life and seriously injured a man, police said Monday.
Around 5:45 p.m., authorities responded to the 700 block of W. Root for a shooting investigation. Police said an 18-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were inside a 2002 black Saturn when a Red 2014 Nissan Altima drove up alongside them, and an occupant from the vehicle fired shot.
The woman, who suffered a gunshot wound to the body, was taken by ambulance to the University of Chicago Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The medical examiner has identified the woman as Myesha Jackson. Police said that the vehicle crashed into a nearby building upon being shot.
The 21-year-old man, shot in the chest, was taken by ambulance to the University of Chicago in critical condition.
No offenders are in custody. An investigation is ongoing.
Speaking to WGN News, Jackson’s mother, Baiyina Atkins, said she can’t wrap her head around the pain she feels, calling the last 24-hours “unimaginable.”
“It seems unreal to me,” she said. “Not Myesha. I never thought that at all.”
The chaos was captured on Facebook Live when the service group Ex-Cons for Community and Social Change (ECCSC), which works to prevent violence, administered CPR and first aid before paramedics arrived.
“Our team immediately started putting pressure on the wounds to keep them stabilized while we waited on the ambulance and the police to arrive,” Tyrone Muhammad with ECCSC said. “She was just fighting for her little life.”
Gregory Sherman said a small blessing was that Myesha Jackson was not alone at the time of her death.
“We were with her,” Sherman said. “A small consolation, I guess.”
A Go FundMe hopes to help the family with funeral expenses.
“I never thought I’d be sitting here like this. You know, y’all got to go someday but not like that,” Atkins said. “She’s just 18 years old. She’s a baby. She’s a baby. I would take her spot at any moment.”
